What You Can Do When Your Spiritual Life Is Lacking

You are in a desperate situation. You take your mobile phone and call your closest friend. You hear nothing from your mobile phone. Usually you would hear the other side ringing or a recorded message that the number you are calling is busy or out of coverage area with the request to try again later. But this time you hear nothing.

No Contact Whatsoever

You check your mobile phone. It is on alright. You wonder what has happened. Is the company providing your mobile phone service not in operation at this time? Or is there something wrong with your phone?

You are in a desperate situation and you need immediate help. Your closest friend cannot be reached. You try another number just to find out if your mobile phone is working alright and the company providing your mobile phone service is online. But the same thing happens with this other number. You hear nothing from your phone after you dial the number.

What do you do? You do not know what to do.

This situation is similar to that when you seem to have lost contact with God the Spirit. You pray. You call upon Him. But there is no sign that He is still there. You hear nothing. And you need Him most badly now. And you do not know what to do next.

Those who write about prayer tell us that God answers all prayers. The answer can be any of the three: Yes, or No, or Wait. But this time you do not even know if you can still contact this Spirit God. He is out of reach. You cannot hear anything from His side.

This is what is meant when you say that your spiritual life is lacking. You cannot contact God. You cannot seem to move spiritually. Your spiritual life is lacking this most essential requirement: contact with the Spirit God. You seem not to grow spiritually.

So, what do you do?

Fortunately in the spiritual life you can still do something, unlike in the case when your mobile phone does not seem to work. In the latter you will have to ask somebody if his or her mobile phone does work with this service provider that you have. But if you are in a desperate situation and alone, you may not be able to do anything but to pray and wait.

A similar option can be open when you seem to lose contact with God: pray and wait. But there are other options which you can take.

Go to the Sources of Inspiration

The first is to go to the sources of your spiritual life. This is like going to the company that provides service to your mobile phone. Go to the Scriptures, whatever they are and read them. If you are a Christian, read the Bible slowly. If you are a Muslim, read the Qur’an attentively. If you are a Buddhist, read the Tripitaka with care. If you are a Hindu, read the Bhavagad Gita with concentration. Just read. Do not care yet to talk to your God, but listen to the words, to the whispering of your God. He may contact you soon.

Imagine Scenes of Inspiration

This may not work. You may need a picture visible before your very eyes or in your imagination. If you are a Christian recall the image of Jesus dying on the Cross for you. If you are a Muslim, recall the flight of the Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him) from Mecca to Medina, the turning point in Islam. If you are a Buddhist you can recall the picture of Siddhartha Gautama sitting under a pipal tree or Bodhi tree, waiting for enlightenment. Then from this image in your mind you may feel again the Spirit communicating with you, as He has communicated with these persons in your imagination.

The Desert Experience

But this may not also work. Then you need the desert experience, going into solitude, whether in an actual desert or just in the quiet of your own home and just wait. It may take years before your spiritual life moves again, but you may not be able to do anything else but this. Moses waited for 40 years in the desert of Midian before he heard God calling him from the burning bush. Jesus himself waited in the desert for 40 days before he began preaching, teaching and curing people.

You may just have to sit up late at night when you are the only one awake and just wait for the Spirit to move you, to speak to you.

Who knows, the reason why you seem not to be able to contact your God is because your God is trying to quiet you so that He can really contact you and talk with you. This is the moment when your spiritual life lives again, moves again, and carries you to more exciting places in your life. If you are too busy looking for your God, He knows that you cannot find Him in the busyness of your looking for Him. Only in quiet and solitude shall we really encounter our God.

The Benefits of Spiritual Obedience

The first main benefit of spiritual obedience is that it leads us to know the purpose of our life.

Most People Do Not Really Know the Purpose of Their Life

Most people go on living without ever knowing what the purpose of their life is. This is most evident among students who when they are asked what the purpose of their life is, most of them give this answer: “To finish my studies.” Or they would give a very general answer like “to be happy”, “to enjoy life”, etc.

If people only follow the Spirit who ultimately brought them into existence, they would be led to know the purpose of their being brought to planet earth. This is spiritual obedience, following the lead of the Spirit who made all things and governs the affairs of individual human beings and nations.

We are like artifacts in the hands of the Great Artificer. Only this Creator knows why he created each of us. And only He also knows where to put us in the grand design of this universe. If we do not know this Great Creator and do not obey His leading we cannot know the beautiful plan He has laid out for our life.

Abraham Lincoln at first did not realize that his great purpose in life was to abolish slavery in America and preserve the Union of the States. According to records he had only 18 months of formal schooling and yet he attuned himself to the Great Spirit who gradually revealed this great purpose of his life to him. He never formally joined any church but he kept listening to this Spirit and obeyed Him in all he did, except during the last three days of his life.

We Are Led to Attain Our Purpose in Life

The second main benefit of spiritual obedience is that we will be led to attain this purpose in life. Knowing life’s purpose is solving only part of the problem we all face in life. Granted that we know it, we do not by that very fact attain it. Most of us do not know how to attain it. We do not have the proper knowledge, attitude and skills to be able to attain it. But when we obey the Spirit He enables us to attain it, even against all odds.

Again in the life of this great President we see how the Spirit enabled him to attain that purpose even through many political defeats. He was defeated in the first election he entered, he lost also in his first try for the House of Representatives, and he lost twice in the senatorial race. But all these were part of the Spirit’s equipping him for the great work of his life’s purpose.

Safety from Dangers

And the third main benefit of spiritual obedience is that we will be saved from dangers in life. The Spirit knows ahead of time the dangers we will pass through in life and He knows how to warn us about these dangers and to rescue us from them. Again in the case of Abraham Lincoln it is on record that he was warned about his death three days before it happened. He had a dream about this death, a dream which he said, “strangely annoyed” him and he was warned by his personal guard Ward Hill Lamon not to go out at night, particularly to the theater. But he disregarded this dream. Had he followed the warning of this dream he would not have been assassinated. But by this assassination he was spared the pains of old age and a decrepit life. He peacefully died after 9 hours of coma after he was shot by the assassin.

Those are the main benefits. There are other subsidiary benefits, those that come from these three main ones. Some of these are harmony in the home, financial security, interest in one’s work, freedom from depression, etc.

Are You Ready For a Spiritual Awakening?

Yes, are you ready for a spiritual awakening? Are you in a position to take advantage of the great spiritual awakening that is occurring in our very own time?

How would you know if you are ready for this spiritual awakening?

Here are the dispositions or attitudes you should have in order to know if you are ready for this great spiritual awakening that is happening before our very eyes.

Dissatisfaction with the Status Quo

The first indication that you are ready for this spiritual awakening is a dissatisfaction with your present state of life. You may be rich or you may be poor. You may be healthy or sick. You may be normal or disabled or are a special person. You may be academically advanced or illiterate. But if you are deeply dissatisfied with the way things are in your life, then this is a sign that you are ready for a change, a change provided by this spiritual awakening.

Many Attempts But No Success So Far

The second indication is that you have tried many other things to get rid of this dissatisfaction with your present situation in life and you have not found one which has given you the success that you expect, one that surely satisfies and lasts.

You might have tried religion. You have gone to churches, Bible seminars, religious fellowships. But you are still left with this hunger for better things in life.

You might have tried alcohol and perhaps drugs. These have given you temporary relief. But afterwards the gnawing feeling of lack of joy and fulfillment in life returned and you are pushed to more alcohol and more drugs or worse than these.

You might have tried sex with different partners, hoping to enjoy the ultimate sexual thrill, only to be disillusioned and perhaps sick with deadly venereal diseases.

You might have tried basically good living, disciplining yourself to live a decent life, doing good to your self and others, without the help of religion. But to no avail, you are still left with this haunting fear that this kind of life has made you miss many of the enjoyable things in life, like a healthy body and the comfort of a family.

You Have Not Lost Hope for Better Days

And the third sign that you are now ready for this great spiritual awakening is you are still hopeful that there is a better way to live other than the ones you have discovered so far. You have not despaired. You know deep within you that there is a way of escape from the meaninglessness of life.

If these three attitudes are yours, you are ready for this great spiritual awakening.

You may ask me, Does a person have to go through all those miserable experiences of looking for meaning in life, like drugs and irresponsible sex, in order to be ready for the spiritual awakening?

Not necessarily. But most will have to go through one or other of these experiences in order to realize their futility. I myself had to go through the empty rituals of religion to discover that the way out of meaninglessness was not here, in these rituals.
